Hello UM Griz Families and Friends,

My name is Emily Ferguson-Steger, and I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Student Life here at the University of Montana. In this role, I oversee a wide range of student-focused programs and spaces that enrich campus life, promote personal growth, and foster a strong sense of community and belonging located within our University Center (Student Union).

The Student Life department encompasses several dynamic areas, including:

  • The Gaming Den – featuring lawn games, hammocks, and a seasonal ice rink for recreation and relaxation.
  • The Student Lounge – home to a snack bar and casual gathering space that serves as a hub for connection and community.
  • The Branch Center – a space dedicated to inclusive dialogue, collaboration, and programming that supports diversity and belonging.
  • Our newly launched student-facing Makerspace – encouraging innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning.

Through these spaces and initiatives, Student Life plays a vital role in promoting student leadership, well-being, and success—both inside and outside the classroom. Our team is committed to creating opportunities for connection, creative exploration, and meaningful collaboration, contributing to a vibrant and supportive campus culture.

Our department is powered by an amazing team of passionate Program Managers and Assistant Directors, along with more than 40 student employees who develop and implement programming that responds to their peers’ interests and needs.

One of the first opportunities new students will have to engage with Student Life is during the Big Sky Experience - our exciting multi-day orientation program. From Griz Welcome events and Greek Life recruitment, to classes and activities in the Gaming Den, your student will have countless opportunities to get involved from day one through graduation.

If you ever hear your student say, “There’s nothing to do on campus,” please encourage them to check out GrizHub—our central hub for all student events and opportunities. Whether it’s through Student Life, Campus Activities Board, Greek Life, the Gaming Den, the Branch Center, UC Art Gallery, or the Makerspace—there is something for everyone, and we are here to support every step of their journey.

We welcome you to come by the Student Life Center, located on the north end of the 2nd floor of the University Center when you are visiting or watch for activities happening during Family Weekend.

Go Griz!
