Hello UM Griz parents and families!

I’m Amy Capolupo, and I’m honored to serve as your Dean of Students and Associate Vice President for Wellbeing. At the University of Montana, the Dean of Students Office is your student’s go-to hub for support—we’re here to help them thrive both in and out of the classroom. Whether your student has a specific question or just isn’t sure where to turn, we’re always here to help guide them to the right place.

If you ever have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at deanofstudents@mso.umt.edu or 406-243-5225. We’re just a phone call or email away!

Q: How does UM support student success?

A: Great question! There is a team of people here at UM dedicated to your student's success

One key tool we use is Navigate, a platform that helps track and support students’ academic progress. It includes an early alert system that notifies our team if a student is struggling in a course. When that happens, someone from UM reaches out to offer help—we don’t wait for students to ask. We also use Navigate to celebrate wins! When students are doing well, they receive a virtual high-five to keep them motivated.

We also encourage students to connect proactively with their academic success team. On the lower right-hand corner of their Navigate dashboard, students will find a list of key contacts—starting with their advisor. Advisors are knowledgeable about campus resources and can either answer questions directly or point students in the right direction.

And if your student is having a tough time connecting to campus life or dealing with something that’s affecting their wellbeing, we want to know. The Dean of the Students Office has a referral form where you or your student can let us know what is going on. We’ll follow up to make sure they’re getting the support they need.

Students can self-refer, and we welcome hearing from family members, too.

Q: Do you have any advice for parents and families?

A: Absolutely. College is a time of incredible growth, and that growth often comes with a few stumbles. Those missteps are normal—and they’re often where the best learning happens. Our goal is to give students room to grow while making sure they have the support they need along the way.

That said, if you ever sense your student is facing a challenge that feels bigger than a typical adjustment issue, please reach out. My team and I are always here to listen, provide guidance, and help your students move forward with confidence.

We’re proud to partner with you in supporting your Griz!
