Hi, UM Griz parents and families! Today, we're highlighting Erinn Guzik, Director of Counseling Services at Curry Health Center (CHC). Erinn works with a staff of eleven counselors and psychologists to provide clinical mental health services to students.

What Counseling Services Do You Offer?

Curry Health Center offers individual and group counseling services. Group counseling topics change throughout the year and include topics such as stress reduction and mindfulness, combatting college loneliness, sleep skills, grief and loss, and an LGBTQ+ support group. Counseling Services also provides substance use treatment to students through a licensed addiction counselor. Urgent appointments are available daily for students who are unable to wait for regular appointment openings.

Counseling Services uses a short-term, brief model of counseling for individual therapy. This model allows counselors to serve as many students as possible by seeing students approximately every two to three weeks during the school year. If a student wants to be seen more frequently, Counseling Services can help connect them with a community provider who can meet with them more often to meet their clinical needs.

Eligibility and Fees

All registered UM students who have paid the Curry Health Service Fee are eligible to receive counseling through CHC, regardless of whether they have insurance. For students who have the University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), insurance will cover the full cost of sessions. However, if a student does not have insurance, they are still eligible to receive counseling at CHC at an affordable rate. The first visit is free, and subsequent visits are only $20 for students without SHIP. Group sessions are free of charge.

Students for whom cost is a barrier to counseling can speak with their counselor during their initial appointment to discuss how to make CHC counseling more affordable. Counseling Services has designated funds to help students with the cost of counseling. They typically cannot cover the entire cost of appointments, but they can help decrease the financial burden of seeing a counselor on campus.
